Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
