They're Doing to America What They Did with Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and defining occasions – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for others, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to present the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover also.

The obvious and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a type of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Highest Among Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to see the determined opposition regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or not?

America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the highest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it mean feigning the most negative regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that serious US believers ought to accept.
